There was an error downloading update files. (Error #1003)

There was an error downloading update files (Error #1003) is an updater error in ArcheAge

Cause[edit]

Error 1003 is often caused by Anti-Virus interference. For example, it has been reported to occur with the Ad-Aware Antivirus

Solution[edit]

There are several solutions that have been put forward on the official site, however it has been reported that sometimes those steps do not work. The two most common causes are listed here.

Drive Formatting[edit]

The first thing to check is if your drive is formatted as FAT32. FAT32 is an old formatting system that is still popular for external drives because of it's cross-platform compatibility and quick writing. The problem is that FAT32 only allows files up to 4 GB in size. For a game like ArcheAge, that's just not enough.

If you are saving to an internal drive and get this error on Windows, you need to format the drive as NTFS.

If you are using an external drive, like a flash drive or portable hard disk, you can use ExFAT to format it instead. That will give you the increased file size limit while preserving portability and speed.

Either change the download/install location to a volume that supports file sizes larger than 4 GB, or reformat the drive you are using and try again.

Anti-virus[edit]

The anti-virus installed on your machine can often be the culprit.

The brute-force method is to completely uninstall the anti-virus (i.e Ad-Aware), run the updater, and then, after the game is patched, re-install the anti-virus.

If you have the free version of Bitdefender or other similar anti-virus with heuristic scanning there is no need to uninstall. Simply turn off the "Virus Shield" or "Scanner" and try again.

  • Easy Fix! Go into your Task Manager and enable "Show More" to view background applications. Simply END TASK on any and all Anti-virus, anti-adware, anti-malware and anti-spyware programs that are running. DO NOT BROWSE FREELY UNTIL THE UPDATE HAS FINISHED. After the update has finished, restart your PC (thus, rebooting antivirus programs) and viola, it will be downloaded and you can continue to browse. It is not recommended to use Web Browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox and IE to surf the web while your anti-virus is disabled for obvious reasons.

Note that if you installed the game through Steam, the GlyphClient and GlyphDownloader executables on Windows will be found at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\ArcheAge
