You start in some tight quarters so use Half Sail to make it on through without too much risk of smashing into things. The moment you get clear though, go to Full Sail to catch up to the Independence. This is the ship you are escorting and defending. Just after she passes the Aquila you have 17 enemy vessels to deal with.
Move in toward the ships then swing to port or starboard and let loose a broadside to catch as many as you can in a single burst. You need to watch the Independence to avoid seeing it just outright take too much damage. The quicker you thin down the fleet of ships, the less damage it will take.
Most of the ships you are facing are Gunboats and Schooners. Alternating between the Swivel Cannons and the broadside will ensure you can make the most of your various shots.
