Sailing the Jackdaw in AC4 Black Flag

Sailing was introduced to the AC series in Assassin's Creed 3, but wasn't fully fleshed out until Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag, in which it became one of the game's core mechanics.

Protagonist Edward Kenway is a pirate, and the captain of the Jackdaw, and as such he must sail very frequently.

When sailing, players must take into account several factors both environmental and manmade. Storms can turns and toss the Jackdaw, and even damage it if they get too severe. Then there are the enemy ships that dot the horizon, and that can be battled, boarded or even avoided altogether should the player be quick enough.

Sail Positions[edit]

The sails can be set to three different positions, each of which has a different effect on the Jackdaw, its speed, and its maneuverability.

Full Sail[edit]

Setting the Jackdaw to full sail will capture the most wind, propelling it forward at the highest possible speeds. This speed comes at a cost, though.

At full sail, the Jackdaw is at its least maneuverable, so it's best to keep on a straight heading.

Half Sail[edit]

Half sail strikes a balance, giving the vessel moderate speed while still granting it a decent turning radius.

No Sail[edit]

With no sails unfurled, the Jackdaw will move based on nothing but its own momentum and the shifting of the waves.

This is best when trying to take a stealthy approach, or when navigating through dangerous coves or minefields.
