Sails in AC4 Black Flag

The Jackdaw's sails help it reach deadly speeds at sea by catching the winds of the Caribbean in their massive length.

Sail Positions[edit]

The sails have three positions, each of which effects the movement of the ship.

Full Mast[edit]

Full mast means that the sails are extended to their maximum length.

This is done to give as much surface area as possible for the wind to catch on to the sail, propelling the Jackdaw to its maximum speeds.

However, with great speed comes great trade-offs, as the turning speed of the ship is lowered significantly. It's much harder to steer a ship that's being propelled in one direction so strongly.

Half Mast[edit]

Sails at half mast are halfway unfurled, giving the ship about 50% speed but enabling much more precise turning.

Sails Up[edit]

With sails all the way furled, the ship won't catch any wind and will have zero to minimum speed.

However, it can sometimes be advantageous to furl the sails all the way up.

Stealth situations or situations in which objectives must be observed through a periscope can be best tackled from a stationary position.

Strong trade winds moving against your ship can also necessitate rolling the sails up so that the Jackdaw does not get blown hopelessly off course.

Finally, the ship is at its maximum mobility when stationary. Although the boat won't hardly move forward, it can be easiest to reposition the ship with its sails rolled all the way up.
