The stun attack is a countermeasure that a target can use on his/her pursuer to gain the upper hand.
By timing a press of the attack button properly, the target can stun his pursuer, giving him much needed time to flee and find a new hiding spot.
While a target is stunned, he can be killed by a ground kill.
