Biography[edit]

From a young age, Florence Nightingale wanted to be a nurse. She was self-taught and went against her parent's wishes to pursue this dream of hers. They saw it beneath their upper class standing.

She got her start in nursing during the Crimean War in 1854. She with 38 other Nurses and 15 nuns that she personally selected. They were sent to the front lines to tend to the wounded there. During this time, Florence Nightingale came to realize that Nurses needed to be better trained before being sent out to the front.

She returned to England in 1855 and established the Nightingale Fund. This was set up to better train nurses to handle war-time conditions. Through this school, she publishes her book, Notes on Nursing. This would become the corner stone of the training school that the Nightingale Training School in St. Thomas's Hospital.

Later Life[edit]

Florence Nightingale was dedicated to championing women's rights and better sanitation in London and India. While she did fight for women's inclusion into the workforce, she argued against women become physicians or being able to vote.

She passed peacefully in her sleep at the age of ninety.
