Call of Duty: Black Ops II is the ninth entry in the core Call of Duty series, and the second in developer Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops subseries. It is to be released on November 13, 2012 for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and Microsoft Windows.

Synopsis[edit]

Call of Duty: Black Ops II takes place in both the 1980s and the year 2025. It tells the tale of two interconnected stories, both seen from the viewpoint of Call of Duty: Black Ops protagonist Alex Mason and his companions.

Characters[edit]

Alex Mason returns for this game as an aged version of the experienced soldier he once was. He will be joined by Frank Woods, who also narrates the story in the futuristic 2025 sections. Finally, Alex's son David makes his debut as the protagonist of the 2025 sections of the game.

Activision has hinted that the side-story of Viktor Reznov may continue in this second entry as well.

Plot[edit]

The game's campaign will integrate two different storylines, one taking place in the 1970s and 1980s and the other taking place in 2025.

During the first story, which takes place in the Cold War, Alex Mason will fight a series of proxy wars for the United States against enemies in Central America, Afghanistan and Angola. This story will tell the tale of the game's primary antagonist, Raul Menendez as he rises to become the international power that he is in the future story, where he threatens the world with a series of automated drones. Menendez is a Nicaraguan narco-terrorist who leads the Cordis Die movement, who claim to aim to end economic inequality, but do so through terrorism.

In the future, this movement has ballooned into a full-on war against the United States using Drones. It begins when a cyber attack destroys the Chinese Stock Exchange, which leads to the banishment of rare earth elements. Naturally, this makes them one of the most desired commodities on the international market. A second cold war begins between China and the United States. During the midst of the war, Menendez frames China for an attack against the United States in an attempt at igniting a full blown war.

Zombies Mode[edit]

Zombies Mode is being completely revamped for this release. An open world will appear in the mode for the first time, allowing players to transition from one massive area to another. In between each area, you will find hidden items, weapons and story elements. It will be supported by 4-player co-op.

Tranzit Mode[edit]

Tranzit is a new mode that combines multiple maps and allows players to travel between them on a bus or on foot.

Survival Mode[edit]

Survival is the standard Zombies mode from Call Of Duty: World At War and Call Of Duty: Black Ops, forcing players to fend off as many waves of enemies as possible before eventually succumbing to death. Players will do that by building up barriers on windows and using weapons boxes to reinforce their bases.

Grief Mode[edit]

The brand new Grief Mode takes a few cues from Left 4 Dead in that it casts four players as Zombies and pits them against four human players.

Infected Mode[edit]

In Infected Mode, players take on the role of a human player until killed by a zombie, at which point they become "infected" and turn into a zombie player.

Changes And Improvements[edit]

Call of Duty: Black Ops II is the first game in the series to feature branching story paths and dynamic decision making. Depending on which paths players choose, the story can actually change, and characters can live or die. These choices will also influence gameplay; in a Los Angeles level shown at E3 2012, the player was offered a choice between sniping from atop a ruined highway, or jumping down into the action and getting into close-range combat.

Strike Force Missions[edit]

Black Ops II will feature Strike Force missions for the first time. These missions will feature permadeath for their characters; if a character dies, the story will continue on without them.

Graphics Improvements[edit]

Black Ops II's engine has been significantly upgraded from that of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and features improved textures and lighting.

The game also offers a 3D output option.
