To use, open the inventory and put it on your quickbar and press the slot number. Or drag it to your hands. Then press "space" to draw it (kind of like using a weapon)

A magnetic compass that contains a magnet which interacts with the earth's magnetic field and aligns itself to point to the magnetic poles.
