“You have entered a Darkness Zone. If you die in a Darkness Zone, you will be returned to the start of it.”

These Darkness Zones are a more challenging area. These place respawn restrictions as to what you have to redo when you die. It is very important to keep your health up and know where you can find some cover to regenerate some health.
While stated you will have to return to the start of it, it refers more to the checkpoints within the events of the Zone.
For example: If you defeat 2 of 3 bosses and die to the third, then you will only need to replay the third. This assumes there are checkpoints within the fight. There are cases where it will mean redoing the fight. Listen for Ghost's chatter or a change in music to highlight on of these.
You know you are in a Darkness Zone when you see this marking by your Health Bar:
If completing a mission with a Fire Team, team members can revive you.
