Make your way through Diamond City. You want to hear people talking about the Railroad. This can happen nearby Valentine Detective Agency. There can be some other places that you can hear about them inside the city.
This will place a marker for the Sole Survivor to follow in the Boston Common. Just be mindful of Swan's Pond
