"Trial of Iron" is a Challenge Mode in Pillars of Eternity.
Basically this is a hardcore mode where your save is deleted if you die.
Description[edit]
In Trial of Iron mode, only one save file is kept for the entire playthrough.
If the player is killed, the file is deleted, and you must start again
This option can't be changed in-game.
