Chasing Echoes is a main story quest in Skyrim: Dawnguard.

Starting Location[edit]
The quest Chasing Echoes starts inside Fort Dawnguard (if playing for the Dawnguards) or in Castle Volkihar (if playing a Vampire Lord)

Chasing Echoes is given by Serana, the daughter of Lord Harkon
Description[edit]
Serana has indicated her desire to locate her estranged mother, Valerica, who had fled castle Volkihar with one of the Elder Scrolls. She believes that Valerica may have left a clue to her whereabouts somewhere in the courtyard of the castle. In order to avoid detection by Harkon, we've decided to utilize a secret entrance on the back side of the island

Explore Castle Volkihar's Courtyard
Enter the Volkihar Undercroft
Investigate the Moondial
Explore Castle Volkihar's Ruined Tower
Locate Valerica's Journal
Enter the Soul Cairn
Walkthrough[edit]
Go around Castle Volhikar to find the secret entrance.
When you get to the courtyard, there is a moondial that is missing some crests. Locate all the crests and place them in position. All crests are located in the area surrounding the moondial.[1]
Enter the ruined tower. There are several chains that need to be pulled here to open doors and unlock secret passages. When you get to the top of the tower and reach a dead end, look for a candlestick that you have to activate to unlock a secret door.[2]
Reach the laboratory. Find Valerica's Journal on top of one of the shelves, then gather the following materials from around the room:
Fill the Portal Vessel. This will open the portal to the Soul Cairn.
Previous Quest[edit]
Prophet, in which you have to locate Dexion Evicus, a Moth Priest to help you decipher the Elder Scroll (Sun) that Serana is carrying and learn about the Prophecy.
Next Quest[edit]
Beyond Death, where you search for Valerica in the Soul Cairn.
