“Take Up Arms” is a Companions Faction Quest in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Beginnings this quest[edit]
You need to be introduced to the Companions Guild to begin this quest.
Head out to the Pelagin Farm as you are heading toward Whiterun from Riverwood for the first time. You will find Aela the Huntress and a number of other companions attacking a Giant that has strayed to the farm. Help them kill the Giant. After that, talk with Aela.
If you miss talking with Aela the Huntress outside the city then head into Whiterun and talk with the barkeep inside The Bannered Mare and talk with Hulda (or Ysolda) about rumors. She will tell you that the Companions are recruiting. This will give you the miscellaous objective to speak to the leader of the Companions.
Either way will direct you to Jorrvaskr. Go on inside.
Inside Jorrvaskr, watch the brawl. Turn to the South after that and head down the stairs there.
This will take you the living quarters in Jorrvaskr. Head to the North and find the room with Kodlak Whitemane.
He is talking with Vilkas about something. Talk with Kodlak and ask to join the Companions. He will tell you to test yourself again Vilkas.
Follow Vilkas outside to the back portion of Jorrvaskr. Attack him until he tells you to stop.
Vilkas will give you his sword to take to Eorlund Gray-Mane. Head up the stairs and talk with Eorlund at the top of the stairs. Talk with him about himself and the Companions. He will explain things about the structure. Finishing the conversation, Eorland will ask you to bring a shield to Aela the Huntress.
With the shield in your possession, head back into Jorrvaskr and go back down into the Living Quarters. She will be found around the middle of the hall, off to the left, in the left-hand room.
Tell her you have her shield. She will recognize you from the farm, if you were there, she will then ask you if you could take Vilkas in a real fight.
Aela will ask Farkas to show you to your room. He will explain that you can talk with him or Aela the Huntress for work. After you have done some work for the Companions, you will also be able to get work from Skjor and Vilkas.
