The Fog of War is the black shroud that covers the battlefield in XCOM Enemy Unknown. It makes it impossible to see alien activity beyond the shroud until your units move into range. Setting a unit to Overwatch is typically the best way to proceed through the Fog of War if you're unsure of what lies on the other side.
