Overview

Designed to give a streamlined RPG experience, Expedition makes use of a card-based system to adjudicate typically rule-heavy elements of RPG sessions, such as combat.[1] The NES companion cartridge is designed to provide ambient music, animated graphics to go along with the quests, and to make playing a full RPG session even simpler.[2]

Development

The creators of the original Expedition game share the hometown of Mega Cat Studios, so the two decided to collaborate on a special edition of the game.[3] Working physically, rather than remotely, with another company fits the game studio's overall mission, since they release hard copy cartridges for classic consoles.[4]

Gameplay

Players navigate through quests by answering questions and making decisions. When a fight arises, an on-screen d20 generates random numbers to resolve attacking and other effects. On-screen graphics show the player the current scene or situation they are in. Quests have branching narrative paths an different endings.

The addition of an NES companion makes the Expedition experience more robust, as players are now greeted with animated scenes, eerie soundscapes, and streamlined instructions. Also, players use the TV screen, as opposed to the screen of a smartphone.[5] The game itself adds real-time elements to combat and other scenarios, to speed-up decision making and prevent sessions from dragging on.[6]
