Grand Theft Auto Online - Sometimes referred to as GTA:O or GTA Online - is a free-to-play multiplayer version of the popular Grand Theft Auto open world crime series.
GTA Online is included for free with every copy of Grand Theft Auto V.
Release Date
Despite being included with every copy of GTA V, GTA Online did not launch on September 17 like the single-player component.
Instead, Rockstar announced that the online suite would launch seperately on October 1, 2013.
This was seen by some as an initiative to combat used game sales of GTA V.
Separate Game
Grand Theft Auto Online is a separate game from GTA V, despite being included in the same package, and is being treated as such by both Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two Interactive.
Microtransactions
It was revealed shortly before GTA Online's launch that it would include four types of microtransaction, each of which would give the player varying amounts of in-game currency. The microtransactions are split into four types:
Content Packs
Numerous pieces of post-launch DLC are planned for the release of Grand Theft Auto Online. These packs include content that will allow the player to edit and publish their own missions and maps.
