The Last of Us

The Last of Us is a third-person action/horror title from developer Naughty Dog and publisher Sony, made exclusively for the Playstation 3.

Characters[edit]

The title stars two co-leads: the experienced and roughened Joel, and the teenage Ellie. Both are made unwitting companions due to unspecified events early on in the story, and must see to each other's survival in a post-apocalyptic world.

Story[edit]

Unlike many post-apocalyptic games, the apocalypse of The Last of Us is not the result of zombies, plague or even biblical machinations.

Instead, the catastrophic event at the game's heart is a fungal infection, based on a real-world fungus that kills, resuscitates and takes control of ants.

Similar to this real-world fungus, the spores in The Last of Us get inside of a human host and kill its brain, keeping the nervous centers alive so as to manipulate them for their own end. In the process of taking over a human host, the fungus causes gross mutations to spread throughout the host's body. These include plant-like spores, stalks and flaps which grow off of the host's body and face, giving them a grotesque, half man/half plant appearance.

With these Infected stalking throughout the forests and cities of North America and bandits and looters plundering what little is left of human society, the country is plunged into anarchy. The world has been under the influence of this fungal infection for over a decade now - children, Ellie included, have been born and raised to know nothing but violence - and hopes for a cure are quickly dwindling. With danger around all corners, the only immediate hope for Joel and Ellie is that of survival.

Platforms[edit]

The Last of Us is exclusive to the Playstation 3.

It will not be coming to the Playstation 4.

Release Date[edit]

The Last of Us is set to release on June 14 in North America.

This is an unusual release date for a game because it is a Friday; most game releases come on a Tuesday.

Special Edition[edit]

A special edition of the title, called the Survival Edition, will retail for $89.99 and include a special case, an art book, a comic book, a voucher for a future piece of single-player DLC, and a collection of Naughty Dog stickers.
