The journal is most typically found as pictured to the right, lying on a table amongst other items including the CV Radio and the silverware set.
Unlike in recent sandbox games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Dishonored, players cannot pick up, open or read the journal. Instead, it functions simply as an environmental prop.
