Remember Me

Remember Me is a third-person action adventure title developed by Dontnod and published by Capcom.

The title takes place in a hard sci-fi future and progresses largely through the streets and facilities of Neo-Paris, France, where players will encounter hand-to-hand combat, environmental traversal setpieces, and memory-based puzzles.

Story[edit]

The adventure stars Nilin as a Memory Hunter, an agent contracted by the monolithic MEMORIZE corporation to alter people's memories on a contractual basis. Nilin's life is turned on its head when MEMORIZE agents kidnap her and drain her memories, rendering her effectively amnesiac. A mysterious voice guides Nilin from the facility to the slums, where she makes a plan to take revenge against MEMORIZE and win back her identity.

Along the way, she will be thwarted by MEMORIZE agents using both weaponry and memory tricks against her. Nilin will need to delve into the mindspace of her enemies, manipulating their memories in order to suit her goals.

Gameplay[edit]

Remember Me is a third-person action adventure title in the vein of Batman: Arkham Origins or Sleeping Dogs, notable for its use of hand-to-hand combat and environmental traversal.

Platforming[edit]

Nilin is a very agile character, and this manifests itself in the game's platforming segments, which have her climbing up and around pipes, windowsills, ledges and other urban environmental features.

The platforming in Remember Me is very much reminiscent of that in the Uncharted games, in that most paths are highlighted through color use and jumping is a simple matter of pointing the stick in the proper direction before climbing.

Combat[edit]

Combat has been compared to that of Batman: Arkham Origins many times, but killing enemies requires a bit more finesse in terms of control than it does in the Arkham games.

Nilin can counter enemies to deal heavy damage when attacked, but her own offensive arsenal is nothing to scoff at either.

Nilin's repertoire of combat moves is said to be fairly technical, and requires the input of combos to pull off most of the more advanced moves. In this way, the combat keeps the natural ebb and flow of many modern titles while requiring a bit more from the player in the way of technical prowess.

Memory Puzzles[edit]

The biggest distinguishing feature by far of Remember Me is its memory puzzles.

Using the training she received at MEMORIZE, Nilin can infiltrate an enemy's mind and manipulate their memories in a series of interactive environmental puzzles. These puzzles range in goal and execution, but always center around the manipulation of objects during the given "scene." In order to achieve the desired outcome and change the target's memory, Nilin will have to constantly move objects around the scene, replaying it again and again for contextual clues until all of the right pieces line up and the desired result is achieved.

Sexism and the Female Protagonist[edit]

After Capcom confirmed a summer release date for Remember Me, developer Dontnod went on record claiming that they had spoken with several high-profile publishers regarding releasing the title, but no deals were ever reached due to the game's female protagonist. Publishers did not believe that the title would sell because it starred a woman, and thus passed on it.

This falls in line with several other reports to come out over the last several years, such as the revelation that Sleeping Dogs starred a female in its prototype stage, but was scrapped and turned into True Crime Hong Kong by Activision.
