This Recommendation Quest is 1 of 7 that you need to complete to gain admittance into the Mages Guild.

Bruma Mages Guild

A smaller guild with an interesting layout. There’s the main level, with set of stairs on either end of the house going down into the dormitories below. While most of the Guilds have a specialization, Bruma is unique because it doesn’t.

You can talk to J’skar, the invisible Khajiit for Destruction training. Both Volanaro and Selena offer a good variety spells for sale. Be sure to visit them both after the Recommendation Quest and purchase everything.

This guild hall will become unusable once “A Plot Revealed” in the Mages Guild Quest line is begun.

Walkthrough

Getting Started

Make your way to Bruma. Once inside the city, you will want to head for the middle level. Just to the right of the middle stairs you can find the Mages Guild. Go inside and you will want to talk with Jeanne Frasoric. She’s the head of this Guild Hall.

Asking her for a “Recommendation” will have her tell you about a missing Guild Member. Ask her about “J’skar” to learn about the Khajiit that’s vanished from the Guild Hall. She wants him found before anyone from the Arcane University stops by. To this end, she asks the Hero to talk with the other Guild Members.

Finding J’skar

While there are a few Guild Members to talk with, there’s only one important one: Volanaro. Talk with him and improve his disposition toward the Hero to 70+. Ask him about the “Prank” to learn the offer. At this point, he’ll agreed to help the Hero IF you steal Jeanne’s book: Manual of Spellcraft. To this end, he’ll grant you the spell: Minor Latch Crack (the equivalent of Open Very East Lock).

Prank Jeanne Frasoric

It’s time to get to work. While Jeanne’s away, you can head to the Southern end of the Guild Hall. Start sneaking and head up the stairs. Go over to the door on the right and open it up. This is Jeanne’s room and office.

Go to the left and over to her desk. Now, either pick the Lock (Very Easy) or use the Spell Minor Latch Crack. Either one will get you inside it. This will let you take Jeanne’s copy of Manual of Spellcraft. This is a unique copy of the book and no other can stand in for it. Slip out of the room after that.

With the Manual of Spellcraft obtained, go back downstairs to the ground level floor. Once again, find and talk with Volanaro. He’ll ask for the book, so turn it over to him. Now, he’ll ask you to meet him in his room after 10pm.

Meeting J’skar

Pass the time until loosely 10pm. Make your way downstairs. Go to the Northern end of the dormitory. Head into the Northeastern door to find Volanaro. If you look carefully (or a life detecting effect) you can see the shimmer of someone else in the room.

At 10pm or just after, approach and talk with Volanaro. He’ll ask if you want to find J’skar. Choose that dialogue option and he’ll reveal the Khajiit reveal himself. Talk with J'skar if you want to know more about why he and Volanaro have been doing these things.

Report to Jeanne Frasoric

With all this done, you just need to report back to Jeanne Frasoric to finish this Recommendation Quest. Just talk with her again and ask about the Recommendation. She’s happy about the return of J’skar and puzzled over something she’s misplaced. Regardless she’ll gladly write a recommendation letter to the Arcane University on your behalf.
