This is 1 of 7 quests that the Hero of Kvatch needs to complete to gain admittance to the Mages Guild. This quest is also called “Fingers of the Mountain.”

Chorrol Mages Guild

Chorrols Mages Guild is found in the Northern Quarter. It’s found between Arborwatch and the Fighters Guild. This Guild specializes in Conjuration Magic.

You can buy spells from Athragar who has a LOT of Conjuration Spells.

Walkthrough

Talk with Teekeeus

Make your way into the Mages Guild. Head inside and find the Argonian, Teekeeus. He is the head of this Guild Hall. Ask him about the “Recommendation” and then “Earana.” You will need to talk to her to find out what she’s in town to do.

Find and Talk with Earana

Once you’ve had that conversation, step back outside. Earana is staying at the Grey Mare. She’s in the second room on the left. She sleeps there every night between 12am-8am. After waking, she heads to the plaza with the Great Oak. She wanders all around the whole day after that. She takes a break around 1pm for a 3 hour meal back at the Inn.

With all that in mind, you should be able to find her easily enough. Just approach and talk with her. She sees that you’re a part of the Mages Guild but could use your help. But there’s no need to involve the Guild in the matter. Agree and she’ll give you the assignment.

Earana needs you to head into the Mountains north of Chorrol to find a location called Cloud Top. She doesn’t have the exact location, just the bearing to get you started. It’s enough.

Optional: Report to Teekeeus

With this information on hand, you can either set out or take some time to head back to Teekeeus. Talking with him, choose “Fingers of the Mountain.” He’ll be surprised that the book actually exists and that Earana knows where it is.

With that, he will charge you with getting the book and bringing it back to him so the Guild can keep it safe.

Find Cloud Top and “Fingers of the Mountain”

With the basic direction you’ve got it’s enough to get started at least. Go ahead and exit Chorrol through the Northern-most exit available. It’s a climb up the mountain regardless of most approaches.

Once you get up the mountain, you will find an archway marking the start the path to Cloud Top itself. Just follow the path upwards to find the few remains of Cloud Top.

When you arrive at Cloud Top, you will see little more than shattered pillars. Most telling is a charred corpse by a broken pillar with the remains of a white column.

Investigate the Charred Remains. On them you will find the book: “Fingers of the Mountain.” Collect the book and return to Chorrol. You have a choice to make now. You can either turn the Book to Teekeeus or to Earana. Look at the rewards for each before making your choice.

Return the Book to Earana

Going back to Chorrol, you can head to Earana. Just talk with her and you’ll turn over the “Fingers of the Mountain” to her. This will have her promise you a translation in 24 hours and award you 1 Fame.

• Doing this will update the quest (while reporting its complete) to report to Teekeeus. He’s not happy about it and asks you to steal the book back from her.

Return to the Book to Teekeeus

Bring the book back to the Chorrol Mages Guild. Find Teekeeus and talk with him once again with the Fingers of the Mountain” in your inventory. He will reward you with the Letter of Recommendation to the Arcane University. You will also gain 2 Fame. Take a moment to follow him to his room to see where he puts it for reference.

• Doing this will update the quest to have report this to Earana. Spoiler, she’s not happy
• If you follow him, you can just steal the book from him immediately after he puts it into the chest in his bedchamber. This makes everything a lot simpler and saves you running back and forth later.

Fingers of the Mountain Part II

Steal the Book from Earana

Teekeeus has asked you to steal the book from Earana. Head to The Grey Mare. It’s time to break into her room while she’s out. Remember, you need to give her 24 hours to translate the book to get the full rewards for this quest.

Inside the Grey Mare, go to the back left and take the stairs up. Go to the back left room and head in. You will find a Locked Chest (Very Easy) just inside on the right. Open the chest on up to find the “Fingers of the Mountain.”

Leave the Inn and head back to the Chorrol Mages Guild. Just bring the book back to Teeneeus at this point. He’ll thank you for your efforts and provide the Letter of Recommendation to the Arcane University.

Steal the Book from Teekeeus

Earana has asked you to steal the book from Teekeeus. You will need to break into Teekeeus’s room to steal it back.

Teekeeus’s room is on the top floor of the Chorrol Mages Guild. Once you get inside, head around the corner and then go into the small bedchamber. Look to the right of the bed to find a chest sitting there. Open the chest to find the “Fingers of the Mountain” sitting inside it. Take the book and return to Earana.

Once you’ve stolen the book back from Teekeeus and given it to Earana, she’ll need 24 hours to translate it. Just talk to her after that to get the translation. Proceed with the quest as normal after that.

Get the Book’s Translation from Earana

You will need to return to Earana 24 hours after you’ve given her the Book. This will let you get her Note. This gives you the information you need to get the Spell itself.

• If you turned in the Book to Earana and reported to Teekeeus, wait to get the translation BEFORE stealing the book back.

Unlock the Spell: Fingers of the Mountain

In order to get this spell, you will need a Welkynd Stone in your inventory and at least 1 Spell that can do Shock Damage. Once you have the stone in your inventory, return to Cloud Top. You will need to go to the pillar that has the Charred Remains nearby it.

At this point, equip whatever gear you have that will protect you from Shock Damage and the Shock Spell. Go to the pillar with the Charred Remains by it. Hit this pillar with your Shock Spell. A bolt of lighting will strike the pillar and you. It can do serious damage if you’re not ready for it. But you will then gain the “Fingers of the Mountain” Spell.

While in theory, a great spell, it’s costs are higher than anything comparable that you can just create on your own with Spellcrafting.

Getting Welkynd Stones

The Follow Locations/Ayleid Ruins have Welkynd Stones. They are very common inside the Ayleid Ruins, making it easy to have at least 1 on hand. They restore the Hero’s Magicka fully when used. None of them respawn once collected.
