Summary

Speak with Arquen to be brought to the secret tomb of the Night Mother. Survive the reveal of the traitor and claim the rewards for becoming the Speaker.

Walkthrough

Speak with Arquen

To progress this quest, you must speak with Arquen in the Applewatch Farmhouse between 12am-3am. She will then lead you to where the Tomb of the Night Mother is. The Hand needs to be reformed and only by invoking a ritual can that properly occur at this point.

Enter the Tomb of the Night Mother

You will arrive in Bravil. Follow the other surviving members of the Hand to the Lucky Old Lady Statue in the middle of the main plaza. They will pray to it and the statue will move to reveal a hidden trapdoor that leads to the Tomb of the Night Mother.

Survive

The Night Mother is angry at someone coming into her tomb. She also reveals that Lucien Lachance was loyal to Sithis through his final breath. Betrayal among the members of the Hand! As soon as the Night Mother finishes talking, the traitor is revealed.

Mathieu Bellamont will draw his dagger and attack. He quickly kills Belisarius and Banus. He then attacks the Night Mother. Defend the Night Mother and attack him! He will die fairly quickly. The Night Mother will approach you after that.

Loot the Tomb

Talking with the Night Mother, you will learn that she knew about the traitor and let him work to strengthen the Dark Brotherhood. If the membership couldn’t figure out the traitor, they weren’t worthy of her attention.

With the Traitor dead, the Night Mother will dub the Hero to be the next Listener. Before you accept the role she does tell you to search her tomb for useful items (and there can be a few). Search it carefully since this is the one time (short of console commands) that you can access this area.

Search around for the chests. You can collect weapons, armor, and other useful items.
