Talk with Raminus Polus

Agree to help Raminus Polus with something else that requires attention. He wants to come to a better understanding of Black Soul Gems. So, he’s asking to to help them in this regard. And it all starts by going and talk with with Tar-Meena, their Archivist who specializes in the Arcane.

Speak with Tar-Meena about Black Soul Gems

Leave the entrance chamber through the Southeast and head to the main campus of the Arcane University. Go down the stairs and over to the building just to the right. This will be the Archives.

Talking with Tar-Meena about Black Soul Gems

Once inside, you shouldn’t have much trouble finding the overtaxed Tar-Meena. She’s clear you’ll need to do your own legwork because she’s busy digging up everything she can on Necromancy. Go through the dialogue with her and its clear it does improve her mood a bit. She directs you to the book, “Necromancer’s Moon.”

Get the Book Necromancer’s Moon

Location of the book, Necromancer's Moon

With a starting point found, you will want to find this book in the Archives. Look back toward the door. To the left of it you can see a desk and a small circular table nearby it (between the desk and a smaller candelabra). Go over to this small circular table and look at it. You’ll see the book you’re after: “Necromancer’s Moon.” Take a moment to read the book to see what it says.

Report to Raminus Polus

With “Necromancer’s Moon” in your possession, head back to the base of the Arch-Mage’s Tower. You’ll find Raminus Polus easily. Approach and talk with him about the book. He’ll realize the Necromancer’s Moon is a Celestial Event and sends you to speak with Bothiel who knows all about these.

Talk with Bothiel

There’s a chance you can just find Bothiel in the Lobby. Otherwise she’ll be inside the Imperial Orrery. Just find and talk with her. Ask her about the “Shade of the Revenant.” While she won’t have any information herself, she’ll remark the Falcar was asking about it as well. More importantly, he dropped the Hastily Scrawled Note. Finish the conversation with Bothiel and read the note to learn about the “Shade of the Revenant.” Go to back Raminus Polus and talk to him aagain about the “Shade of the Revenant.”

Travel to the Dark Fissure Cave

This is just 1 of 4 locations that you can travel to for this quest. It’s the one Raminus Polus directly mentions, so its the base. This is found in the Mountains to the South of Cheydingal.

Learning about Black Soul Gems (at Dark Fissure Cave)

There are a few ways to get the Black Soul Gem. You can chance upon finding one, there’s a note, and there’s a method to create them.

Creation

This requires an Empty Grand Soul Gem.

This can be the easiest one to do, when you have the set-up. It requires a regular celestial event, the Necromancer’s Moon: the Shade of the Revenant. Every 8 days from the start of your Journey, this celestial event occurs. So it would occur on: 1st, 9th, 17th, 25th etc.

  • There is a caveat, but that’s strictly if you’ve spent a lot of time in jail. Add on the amount of time you’ve spent in Jail to keep an accurate accounting of it.

Locations:

  1. Dark Fissure Cave
  2. Fort Istirus
  3. Fort Liunchal
  4. Wendelbek

Go to one of these locations at any point of the day on an appropriate day. You know it’s the right day during the early morning hours or any time at night. From a short distance away you can see a Red Glow above the altar that’s found at each of those locations.

Creating the Black Soul Gem

To create the Black Soul Gem, you will need to go to the Necromantic Altar at the location. Now it’s just a few simple steps to make one:

  1. Place an Empty Grand Soul Gem inside the Necromatic Altar
  2. Cast Soul Trap on the Necromatic Altar
  3. Claim the transformed Black Soul Gem

With the Black Soul Gem in your inventory and you’re ready to return to Polus.

Loot the Handwritten Note

A simpler alternate path is to head into the Dark Fissure Cave. It’s filled with Necromancers and the important Worm Anchorite. This enemy is found just inside the Cave on the left-hand side of the divide. Either defeat them and take the “Hand Written Note” or sneak up and pickpocket the note from them.

Claim a Black Soul Gem – Dark Fissure

Alternatively, you can carve your way through the cave and attempt to loot a Black Soul Gem. It’s a rare drop from necromancers so it can take a while. The Dark Fissure isn’t a terrible cave to navigate.

Witness The Ritual

Using the information about the when of the Shade of the Revenant Moon, you can head to 1 of the 4 locations that it occurs. Wait there for a day and you are guaranteed to witness the ritual performed by necromancers. But the wait feature works against you, so it may require real-time passage through the day

Report to Raminus Polus

Head on back to the Arcane University and the Arch-Mage’s Tower Lobby. You just need to find and talk with Raminus Polus once again. Talk to him about “Necromancers” to reach the end of this quest.

Advancement

With the completion of this quest, you’re ready for another advancement in rank. Talk to Raminus Polus about this to reach a new rank: Magician.

Polus will also explain that any further quests for the Mages Guild are going to come from the Arch-Mage Hannible Traven. You’ve been requested personally.
