Walkthrough
Dawn of a Journey

Link awakenings within his hut inside the Kokiri Village. You are prompted to move forward to the door. There isn’t much to find in here anyways. Outside, Link is greeted by his friend Saria. Move forward to the ladder and have Link climb down it. Saria is ecstatic for Link to have finally gotten a fairy, being the only Koriki without one.
The Path to the Tree
Make your way forward toward the massive tree you can see just beyond the wall in front of you. There is a shallow stream with stones. You can either just run through the water or hop from rock to rock.

Getting to the entrance of the path to the Great Deku Tree, Link will meet Mido. Talking with him, Mido won’t let Link go to meet the Great Deku Tree without a Sword and Shield. Both these items have different requirements. A shield can be purchased from the Kokiri Store and the Sword is hidden in a maze connected to the Village.
Shielded Funds
To get the Kokiri Shield, Link will need to gather 40 Rupees. It seems like a lot, but there’s more than enough rupees to be found. They're scattered about the Village. Either found randomly by smashing rocks and pots or in fixed locations.

Link begins collecting the 40 rupees, with a single rupee
To start, dive into the waters to the left of the path toward the Great Deku Tree. Sitting at the bottom of the stream is a Blue Rupee. After that, head over to the right. Ignore the building and head for the pots to the right of it. Have Link grab and throw these pots. Climb up the nearby ledges to find a few rocks sitting on adjacent ledges as well. Grab and throw these as well to get more rupees.
Head for Saria’s House next. Link can pick up and throw the clumps of grass in front of it for (potential) rupees.

You will want to head to the top middle of Kokiri Village. You will see a few rocks in a stream. A Green rupee sits on the middle rock. Jump up onto the taller rock for a Blue Rupee. After that, dive into the water to the North. Underwater, against the wall, is another Blue Rupee.

Head to the East of that to the circle of rocks with a Kokiri in the middle. Grab and throw the rocks to break them open for the Rupees within.

Take a moment to go up the stairs in the Southwestern corner of the Village. At the top of the stairs, head to the left and go out onto the walkway. Get to the end of the walkway to find another Blue Rupee.

When you have 40 rupees, you will want to head for the Store. This building is found just to the Northwest of Mido. After a quick introduction with “ZL” targeting, you can head inside the store.

Go inside and go to the right of the counter. Sitting in a small alcove there is a Blue Rupee. Talk with the Shopkeeper after that, telling them you want to browse. On the bottom right-hand shelf is the Deku Shield. It costs 40 rupees. Buy it! That’s the first piece of equipment you need to get past Mido. You can buy Deku Seeds (used to stun enemies) or Deku Sticks (a weapon but also can be lit on fire), but those will be readily found soon.

Before you leave the store, you will get a quick tutorial on how to raise your shield. Simply Hold “ZL” to have Link raise it. It will block incoming attacks.
Training and Armaments

Link going to meet the Kokiri for training
Head to the Southwestern corner of the Kokiri Village. Climb up the stairs to find another Kokiri who’s training against a Deku Scarecrow.

Target Move is simple. Use “ZL” to lock onto your target, then use the left thumbstick for movement. Once you master that (having successfully performed it once, you can choose either to work on the side jump or the backflip.

The Sidejump is another targeting focused technique. Go to the right-hand Scarecrow and target it with “ZL” + start moving either to the left or right + Jump. You will need to do this twice to complete the task.

The Backflip is another targeting focused technique. Go to the right-hand Scarecrow and target it with “ZL” + start moving AWAY from the Scarecrow + Jump.

To the South of the Sword Master is a small opening in the wall. Go over to the opening, and you’ll have the prompt to enter. Press forward to have Link crawl forward through the tunnel.
When you emerge from the tunnel, go forward to the sign. Turn to the right to collect a Blue Rupee. Carefully navigate this area with timing to avoid getting rolled over too many times by the boulder. After that, head along the right-hand side. You’ll find another alcove with another Blue Rupee.

Now, head to the Western corner of this square. There is a ladder to climb. Take it on up, and go over to the left. Follow this walkway.

Link obtaining the Kokiri Sword
The walkway will lead you to the rooftop of the structure the boulder has been rolling around. Open the chest to find the Kokiri Sword. With the Sword in hand, take a little time to swing it around, cutting down the nearby shrubs for some Rupees. Head back to the narrow opening that lead in here and crawl back through it. It’s time for the second round of targeting training! Now with a Sword, Link will be able to master the next set of skills.

First is the Jump Attack. Target with “ZL” + Jump Button + “Y”. A Jump attack does double damage of a normal sword swing. Perform this technique once more to complete your training under this master. Take the stairs back down. With both the Sword and Shield, it’s time to revisit Mido.
Mido Yields

Head back to the Eastern end of the Kokiri Village. Talk with Mido again. He’ll begrudgingly let Link through.

Go forward and around the first corner to the left. You’ll encounter your first enemy, a Deku Baba. This one is very passive, just swaying in a small circle.. The only danger is if Link bumps into it. Target it and attack its stalk twice with thrust attacks (press forward while swinging your sword) to quickly defeat it and get a Deku Stick. Or you can use a Jump Attack to defeat it in a single strike.

Two more Deku Baba wait just ahead. Just like the first one, they’ll just sway back and forward as well. Defeat them, collect the Deku Sticks and go forward to the end of the tunnel. It’s time for Link to meet the Great Deku Tree.
