The Plasma Cutter is the signature weapon of the Dead Space series, and makes its fifth series appearance in Dead Space 3.
The Plasma Cutter is notable most for its alternate fire ability, which switches the arc of the beam from a horizontal slice to a vertical slice, to better decapitate enemies. This functionality has been removed as of Dead Space 3 to allow for Weapon Grafting.

The Plasma Cutter was originally used as a mining tool, and fires superheated beams of plasma in a straight line, making it the perfect handgun for dealing with Necromorphs.
